August Ahrens is a Title I school. Title I means 50% or more of our students receive free or reduced meals. Currently, 53.4% of our students receive free or reduced meals. Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended (ESEA) provides financial assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. We are using the additional funds to purchase part time casual hires for our Response to Intervention (RTI) program, English Language Learners (ELL) program, and Kindergarten Ramp Up program, professional development for our teachers, classroom supplies, and to support parental involvement activities, which include, but are not limited to, newsletters, parent nights, workshops, etc.
In May 2013, the Hawaii State Department of Education received federal approval to implement a new school accountability and improvement system aligned with the State Strategic Plan. The new system is called the Strive HI Performance System. Under the new system our school has been classified as a “Continuous Improvement School”.
Starting school year 2013-14, the Hawaii State Department of Education will no longer offer NCLB School Choice or Supplemental Educational Services. If your child is currently enrolled in our school as a result of a Geographic Exception using the NCLB School Choice reason, he or she is entitled to stay in our school through the highest grade served. However, mileage reimbursements or transportation options will no longer be provided.
